Preparing for an ice rescue – Whippany Fire Department’s Ice Rescue Sled

The cold weather brings a different type of challenge to the Whippany Fire Department

We have numerous ponds in town and we our surrounded by numerous lake communities so last year the Whippany Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team participated in a 3-day class which taught us how to safely respond and operate at incidents involving cold water and / or ice rescue operations for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents. This evening the department familiarized themselves with their newly purchased Ice Rescue Sled which allows the team to safely approach a victim who has fallen through the ice and pull them from the ice to safety.
