Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that left two railroad cars fully engulfed in flames Thursday night.

East Hanover police responded to a call of the smell of smoke in a residential area at 10:40 p.m. and found the two cars fully engulfed in flames behind an industrial complex on Melanie Lane, police said.

The railroad cars were on the Morristown and Erie Railroad tracks, authorities said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by East Hanover police, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office and the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

East Hanover fire officials were assisted at the scene by a number of agencies, including the Morris County Fire Coordinator and the Morris County Office of Emergency Management.
