HANOVER, NJ — A beloved neighborhood icon experienced significant damage from a fire today, Monday November 27th. Firefighters battled the blaze at Billy & Madeline’s Red Room in Hanover Monday afternoon and the damage appeared extensive.

Several were sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The extent of the damage is unclear. Since it is Monday and the restaurant was closed, there were no patrons at the establishment.

Flames could be seen coming from the roof of the building. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire. Firefighters from multiple surrounding towns were providing support at the scene.

The tavern, founded in 1933 as Fornaros Tavern, was renamed Billy’s in 1959 when son Billy took over. According to their website, Madeline was added to the name when Billy married Madeline in 1980.
